WHAT IS SMOG
July 2nd, 2007 by admin
What is smog is a great question to dive into right after Canada Day. What drives me crazy is to hear the weather reporter state: “… and because of no winds today, our smog index is way up….” HUH? How absurd it that! That’s not why our smog index is off the chart.
It’s because we’ve polluted our air to the point where we can’t even stay outside without experiencing health ailments. Good grief.
See what look you get on your child’s face when you tell him/her, “Sorry Hon, you can’t…
go outside and play today, us pathetic adults have been so reckless (and we’re not willing to change) and we’ve polluted the air outside so much it’ll make you sick. How about you be a couch potato and sit in front of the t.v. and just vegetate tonight? I’m sorry sweetie, did you ask me what is smog….”
Okay, so I’ve presented (hopefully) a pretty extreme example, but seriously folks, there are those that can not go outside on high smog alert days because of what we’ve so grimly accomplished.
What is smog? It’s really a combination of two words: Smoke and fog. It’s dated back to the 1950’s when London England experienced a mixture of smoke and fog. In these more modern times, smog is apparent when there are numerous types of air pollutants hanging around. Some of the most common emissions are from motors/engines (land, sea or air), incinerators, various industries and the list can go on.
Did you know that there are two types of smog? There is summer and fall/winter smog. For some more tips on what is smog visit here for some quick easy reading.
