Canadian Moose

Have you ever patted a wild, live Canadian moose in its own habitat on the nose? I have. This Canadian moose had stuck its nose halfway into the opening of my car window. Years ago when there was no fencing on the main roads through the Canadian Rockies you’d see plenty of Canadian moose.
This moose was so big he had to spread his front legs apart to lean down to my car. I rolled down my window about three inches and this Canadian moose had a nose so big only its nostrils filled that three inches. His breath was hot and heavy and he was far from aggressive. He then allowed me to pat his warm, humongous head.

Since then, here are some facts that I have learned about the Canadian moose:

Usually not aggressive unless it feels threatened and usually likes to avoid human contact altogether. Cows with calves and rutting bulls may charge, so be cautious if you see the little ones roaming about. They love swamps and forests and are good swimmers. Due to their size they don’t prefer temperatures above 80 degrees and will try to keep cool with their swims.
The Canadian moose are not to be confused with the name “Elk”. Canada does have another animal named “Elk”. Since other people immigrate to different countries, they may innocently speak their term that they have been taught in their own country. In order not to spread confusion it’d be best to use the Canadian moose scientific name “Alces alces”.
