What Do Polar Bears Eat
January 3rd, 2007 by admin
Polar bears are carnivores. They eat a very large amount of food, especially during April to mid-July. A healthy diet is about 2 kg (4.4lbs) of fat per day. There is a fasting period for about three to four months during the ice-free season.
During winter months the polar bears eat
mostly the ringed seals. They enjoy the fat and skin and the viscera. The polar bears hunt for seals on land or by water using the means of a “breathing hole”. They will lay on their tummies, rest their nose at the edge of a breathing hole that they dug through the ice, will wait and remaining motionless for up to a few hours at a time in hopes that a seal will come up for air.
During summer months the polar bears eat a variety of lemmings, salmon and other fish. Later in summer the polar bears will patrol coastal areas looking for whale, walrus carcasses, seabirds and their eggs.
When around humans, the polar bears will scruff through our garbage. Ugh. Hope no one put paint or broken glass or any other material that would harm this powerful carnivore.
