The Polar Bears Habitat
January 7th, 2007 by admin
The polar bears habitat is the entire circumpolar Arctic region . Put in other terms, the polar bears habitat is found in all of the polar regions in the northern hemisphere. They are roamers and do not become territorial. In a life time, the polar bears habitat can cover
100,000 sq. miles. They live mainly in and around these Arctic seas on pack ice, islands and coastlines. They are blessed with extremely good endurance in these frigid Arctic waters and have been seen more than 100 miles from the nearest land or pack ice.
The polar bears actually prefer to live on ice in order to hunt for seals. If the edge of the ice moves, the bear moves with it. If a polar bear becomes stranded in the summer on dry land, it will live off of its fat until winter refreezes the ice.
About half of the 21,000 – 25,000 polar bears in the world live in Canada. Global warming is having an impact on the polar bears habitat. I’ll cover this in a later post.
