What Is An Atom?
December 22nd, 2006 by admin
After writing a small post on the universe, I wanted to bring you to the opposite spectrum - the atom. Reading about the universe can make someone feel very, very small. As though what they do will have no significant impact.
So, a few notes on what is an atom, should make one feel very, very large indeed.
The atom as scientists have believed for centuries now, was the smallest thing on earth. It is the building block of all objects. Now it - the atom - also has a nucleus, so since the nucleus has structure, those structures are even smaller…
The size of the atom is about a ten millionth of a millimeter across. That’s 10 to the power of 10m. That’s one pretty tiny “thing”.
As humans, our life’s spectrum of everyday contact is incredibly broad and deep. Astoundingly though aren’t they are all connected? We fly rockets through our atmosphere and we take down our forests. We’ve got garbage floating in our galaxy.
What I don’t get is, if we can’t control our own actions here on earth, why bother polluting the rest of our galaxy? Can’t we remain focused on what we have, rather than what we don’t have? How about finding solutions to these looming earthly destructions that we’ve created such as global warming?
Will our human species grow to such an extent that we will have to move to another planet just to survive?
Have you ever wondered if your children will live on the moon?
Peace.
