Solar technology is now going to be embraced by the USA Air Force on a very large scale. In fact it will be the biggest solar power plant in North America. It will provide the Nellis Air Force base located in the Nevada desert with electricity by the end of 2007.

It’s purpose is two-fold…

1) To demonstrate how effective solar power is as an energy source to meet some of the country’s needs.
2) In contrast, to prove that more development is required to bring down the costs and ways to store the electricity for times of darkness and cloudy days.

Strangely enough, even though solar energy is about 30 years old, it is still considered a start-up industry according to Paula Mints (a photovoltaic specialist at Navigant Consulting in Palo Alto, Calif.).

So there is lots of room for new ideas and improvements. I just can’t wait to see what the great minds in this industry come up with next.

Peace.
