SOLAR POWER AND ITS GROWTH

After reading about the benefits of solar power and its growth in retail markets, I’m surprised to learn that the US is not quite ready for it. WorldWatch’s Sawin reported:”Some homeowner associations forbid them” from using solar power. Notably though, there are some states which do offer “net metering laws” (run your electricity meter backwards)…

where you can sell unused power back to the grid.

Outside of the US, rural areas outside of cities within countries that are short on power supply (or finding it far too expensive), like those of Algeria, China, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, and Mexico, are setting up programs to help those in need and are answering to the call to those that recognize the benefits of solar power. Southern India is approving small loans (a few hundred dollars) to help power 4 lights or a few lights and a small radio, to those in need and it’s proving to be be very effective.

Solar power, PV cells (or photovoltaic) growth charts show a whopping 41% increase worldwide in 2006 according to the Prometheus Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Thats only one year ago. The Worldwide Watch report noted only 202 megawatts of solar power energy was produced by the US in 2006. Quite low in comparison to other countries.

Our conventional thinking and habits will be challenged as we move forward in regards to renewable energies such as solar power and its growth, but isn’t that what evolution is all about =)

Peace.
