Saving the Woodland Caribou

Woodland caribou need more protection now than ever before. As a citizen, business developer and landowner I encourage you to take heart.
There are simple actions that both citizens of the public and landowners can do to help the woodland caribou.

• If you see a woodland caribou, report it to the Fish and Wildlife Division of the territory you are visiting or living in. Since their population is difficult to determine, getting information on their population trends assists a great deal.

• Please limit when and what you use to explore woodlands on or in. ATV’s and snowmobiles are a real concern for the woodland caribou, particularly during early to mid-October. That’s their breeding time. Then be aware of…

calving season which occurs in the first two weeks of May for Northern Albertans and around the first week of June for west-central Albertans. Each adult female will only bear one calf per year, so these times should be treated with delicate actions and utmost respect.

• Adhere to all land-use guidelines. And why wouldn’t you? It’s for everyone’s safety, including the woodland caribou.

• Lastly, because we are dealing with climate change and global warming, trends may change. The woodland caribou habitat is rapidly changing and therefore so might breeding and calving times. If you make a quick call to your local Fish and Wildlife Division, you will be well informed of any new changes occurring in your area.

Will you make these small changes for big gains?

Peace.
