Ok, so to continue with composting and pests:
4) You want to turn or poke at the pile regularly, about every week or two (every 10 days in winter offers a more stable temperature according to the City of Toronto). Pests are discouraged with a pile thats been disturbed.
5) Checking out how to build a…
“hot” pile will demonstrate how composting truly works in a shorter time frame. It takes a little extra effort, but its extremely effective for warding off pests to carouse through your heap. Visit Hot Pile Composting to give you the lowdown. Its an easy read with sound guidance and uses Imperial and Metric measurements.
6) So, where was I? Oh yes…don’t forget the gold of composting - harvest time =) Collect the compost every 3 - 6 mths from the bottom of the bin. Since the bottom of the pile is comfy and warm, removing the compost also deters compost pests.
I’ll get back to you on some helpful tips on the best location for your compost pile and also, how to build a pest proof compost pile.
