Kyoto Accord

What is the Kyoto Accord? So glad you’re wondering. The Kyoto Accord or Kyoto Protocol is a treaty agreed upon in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan by countries around the globe. It sets out a standard requirement for countries worldwide to reduce their harmful gas emissions that are causing global warming.
The Kyoto Accord is encouraging countries to seek out and use more environmentally sensitive ways to produce and make use of energy. By choosing alternatives other than coal, oil and gas, we and our children may have a chance of survival. (I can’t believe I’m writing that.)
The Kyoto Accord went officially into force on…..

February 16, 2005. Each country’s target for gas emission reduction is different (see my next posting). Personally, and with ignorance since I’ve never read the entire agreement, the standard should be the same across the board. Even though there is a measure as to how much burning of fossil fuels each country is emitting, I believe each country should not be able to produce past a certain level. Surely that would mean more pressure on some countries and not others, but there is no room or time for leniency.
It is a difficult, delicate situation, and the Kyoto Accord is a good beginning. However we – the industrialized nations (creating 84% of these harmful fossil fuel emissions) – have created this mess and as a mother to a child, you will scold the child and make him/her correct its error without further ado.
Are we being the child or the parent?
Peace.
