How Wind Energy Works
March 20th, 2007 by admin
How wind energy works is really no mystery. Think of sails on a sailboat…pretty old technology. Of course how wind energy works on land is a different story.
The use of small electric turbines dated back in the US to the 1920’s. Mind you we have newer technology and an understanding that the higher we go in the sky, the windier it gets (”cube the number” ie:on land the wind speed doubles, then increase…
the power output by eight) - so we can now take better advantage of how wind energy works.
How wind energy works with wind turbines, to date, is a safe alternative to the gruesome nuclear power plants. How often the wind blows, when and how fast makes a significant impact on the turbines generation cost. Turbines are connected to the electrical grid and from there the energy can be sold to consumers. If there’s too much wind it shuts itself down so it won’t be damaged. If the wind is minimal - it won’t turn.
I wonder now how wind energy works if there are 1000’s of turbines turning at once. Would it actually increase the speed of wind around turbine farms creating another issue altogether? Do you know?
Peace.
