GROWING TOMATOES IN POTS: PLANTING
May 22nd, 2007 by admin
This section on growing tomatoes in pots will cover planting. Now that you’ve got all your materials, it’s time to put it all together. If you’ve missed the previous sections, just click on Growing Tomatoes from the Categories section to your right.
1) Take your container and fill it three-fourths full with your soil mix.
2) Use one plant per container (you’ll have wanted to buy the stocky, vigorous ones - some may even have a flower [thats what will become the tomato]). Sit the plant close…
to the stake (if you chose this method), put your soil all around the plant. Please, water thoroughly. If you notice that the soil settles, just add more soil mix until it comes up to a 3/4 inch from the top of the container. If you’re not using a stake, do step one, then do step 2, just center the plant instead.
Set your potted tomatoes in a sunny, preferably “windless” location.
Maintenance for your potted tomatoes:
1) Check water daily, especially if you’re not using hydro gels.
2) Ensure you harvest (remove) mature fruit to encourage continued growth.
3) If you want to fertilize, wait until mid July - and don’t fertilize dry plants. There are a few varieties to select. They are Peters 20-20-20 or Miracle Grow 15-30-15 (these are just a few). Simply follow their instructions. Too, ask at your local garden center if you feel unsure about fertilizing.
4) Check for any pests.
Growing tomatoes in pots seems like my perfect solution to short summers. I’ll check back mid-season to fill you in on any mishaps and/or fortunes =)
Peace
