GROWING POTTED TOMATOES

Part two of my growing potted tomatoes was my research. If anyone wants to know what zone they are in - don’t bother. It’s a total waste of time. It seems dependent on the “flavor of the year” grading system. If you want a real low down, you can read at length about the conflicting grading systems here. My suggestion is to check out whats selling at a garden center in your area. I don’t think they’d sell plants that wouldn’t grow on their own turf. Too many refund requests ;)

It seems that now (mid May) is to late to start with…

seeds in regards to growing potted tomatoes. Not a big deal really. For a buck I can get 4 tomato plants (about 6″ tall) to grow and not have to spend the time caring for them all the while before I can put them outside.

Consider though that growing potted tomatoes requires a little more attention. The soil drys out faster so you’ll need to be attentive with the watering can.

With growing potted tomatoes, its best to find pots that have a circumference of the size of the mature plant. Better still to have the the same height as they are in diameter. This gives enough room for the roots to roam, and helps to prevent them from falling over. So, I figured about a 1′ - 2′ diameter will suffice. Pots can be made from clay (you water more with clay pots though) or plastic. The black plastic pots (or even tubs are a neat alternative) will help to keep the soil warm from the absorption of the suns rays and retain water longer. They retain water longer simply because they are plastic and the water doesn’t evaporate as quickly as a clay pot. Holes in the bottom of any of your chosen pots are essential or your roots will rot and the plant may “drown”.

See you tomorrow - will fill you in on the filler: soil for growing potted tomatoes.

Peace.
