Here are some interesting earthday facts you can use around the water cooler =)
1) Senator Gaylord Nelson is the man who is the founder of Earth Day idea back in 1969. In a Seattle conference held in Sept. 1969, it was announced that come spring of 1970, a nationwide grassroots…
demonstration was going to happen and all persons were invited to participate on behalf of the environment. How cool is that!
2) Environment concern was huge back in 1969. Gladwin Hill reported in the New York Times (Sunday Nov. 30/1969) quoted these earthday facts:
“Rising concern about the environmental crisis is sweeping the nation’s campuses with an intensity that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam…a national day of observance of environmental problems…is being planned for next spring…when a nationwide environmental ‘teach-in’…coordinated from the office of Senator Gaylord Nelson is planned….”
3) To answer where was the first earthday held, well, it wasn’t in one specific location. In fact, the first Earth Day saw 20 million demonstrators and had thousands of local communities and schools participate nationwide.
4) Why was Earthday started? Well, Senator Gaylord Nelson notes that it took about 7 years to evolve since 1962. He was troubled that politicians were not concerned about the state of the environment. So he flew to Washington to persuade President Kennedy that a national conservation tour might give the President and the environment some “limelight” visibility. 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.
5) The proper spelling and grammar of earthday is Earth Day. ;)
Peace.
