Composting and Pests
April 27th, 2007 by admin
Composting and pests aren’t all that common if one uses a little bit of common sense and a smidgen of attention.
Horror stories of composting and pests can be avoided if the pile:
1) Doesn’t contain bones, meats, fish, fatty foods or pet manures. Meat odors and composting with pet manures may attract animals and the break down process (decomposition) will become a longer process.
(Flush pet manures down toilet after you’ve collected some in a garbage container, rather than putting it in the garbage/dump.)
2) Put dead plants or dry leaves (high carbon materials) along the…
inside walls as you build and at the bottom of the pile (an old pallet is great for the bottom too!) in your bin. This offers drainage, odour control and a good airflow. Ensure that earch layer is slightly damp (if you squeezed some, you shouldn’t get drops of water) and this will help to discourage the composting and pests syndrome.
3) Foods (ie: egg shells, peelings etc) are best covered with a layer of composted soil or dry leaves (about an inch) or put into the center of the pile. This will reduce odors. It will also encourage the micro-organisms in the soil to speed up the desired process of composting.
More to come…
