Here we go again. Electric powered cars are now being introduced into Texas on a large scale. They are all electric, street legal and emit zero pollutants. They are called low speed (LSV) vehicles.
They are being sold by Electric Cars of Austin.

The electric powered cars of today are super for those traveling…

shorter distances up to a 45 mile (maximum 75 miles) radius on one charge depending on the vehicle you choose. So parents making errands, community travelers, golf courses (they must get rid of pesticide use [sorry, sidebar I couldn’t resist]), courier companies, universities and their attending students to name a few will benefit greatly.

Since electric powered cars are new to the masses, some considerations would be:

1) Their warranty. Most have coverage for only a year. Hopefully this will improve.
2) Servicing. Is it local to you?
3) Governing laws on where you can drive them: In the US, visit U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities.
4) Where to plug them in? For now, home is your solution or should you run out of power, offer 5 bucks to the first taker that has a power outlet available.
5) How long do the batteries last?
6) Are the batteries recyclable?
7) What government tax breaks or grants are available? Visit #3 link above.

Take one of these electric powered cars and test drive it. See if you’re comfortable. I know when driving the Prius about, it took a little getting used to no engine sounds when we stopped at a red light. Rather a cool feeling really.

Peace.
