Healthy bonsai trees are really easier than one would suspect. These miniature trees really aren’t an ancient Chinese secret any longer. If bonsai trees were left alone to grow in the earth, they would grow and mature to the same size as their earth planted “cousins”. However, I’ll put up three videos…

in succession so that you’ll be triumphant at caring, maintaining, and transplanting for successful healthy bonsai trees.

So here is the first of the 3 videos titled: Maintaining Bonsai Trees. Enjoy.

Peace.

Bonsai trees can indeed be replanted out of pot, once they are mature; if left in the ground, they normally will never grow to their “natural” size.

I notice many old trees these days are downsizing their crowns, and this stunting effect could be due to global warming having an effect on them? The branches are usually broken off, and the overall look is something like big trunk, small crown…normally in forests you may see these specimens. Is it a sign of global warming?

Hey James, thanks for the “check” on that one. I didn’t realize that it had to be mature to be planted in the earth =)

You know, you pose a great question regarding the reformation of mature trees. I don’t have enough supported research to determine such however, more questions would need to be asked I think.

IE: Where do you see these trees, city or rural? Colder or warmer climates? Past 5-10 years of weather patterns? Etc….but, it would be great to see someone take on the task.

Since I have moved this past winter to a whole different climate, I have not lived here long enough to notice these changes. I will though, be watching!

    Thanks for your super input!

    Hi,

Glad to be of help. Mostly, bonsai trees once mature and having grown in a pot, will not attain back their “natural” size if replanted in the earth. They might grow a little bigger, but that’s all.

Regarding the downsizing of crowns of trees, well, I was referring to forest trees (full grown/natural) that I noticed tended to display kinda deformed crowns (in some specimens) that might appear as though they could be suffering from too much heat…

This pattern might be better observed in the tropical climates, where aerial photos show frequent dead standing trees amongst the large canopy trees. I dont know how prevalent this was…say 20 years ago? But it is a little alarming.

James, why not post that question to WWF? www.worldwildlifefund.com
They are a group of super supporters and may either offer you insight or take some action =)

After seeing Al Gore, his pictures depicting “drunken trees” shows on the large scope just what can happen to trees regarding global warming. Sure, it’s due to the permafrost melting, but none-the-less, it’s considered a global warming issue.

By the way, if a bonsai tree was planted outside before it matured, it would grow to it’s normal size wouldn’t it? Is it not a bonsai because of the pruning over the years? Be great to hear your input.

Best to you - oh, and too, nice site you have for bonsai trees :)

    Hi,

Yeah, bonsai trees are bonsai because of the vigorous pruning that takes place to turn them into such; it really is a nice little hobby that doesn’t take up too much space or is messy or requires constant maintenance.

If they were planted in the common earth as young saplings then there would not be any difference between them and their “natural counterpart form” since they are not genetically modified, but then again I have heard that there are certain hybrids that over many centuries, are now small due to repeated cross breeding… ;)

It seems these specialty bonsai trees do not grow big ever.

Oh, and you’re welcome to join the bonsai “club” if you feel that it is a more sustainable way of gardening.

    I think it is :)

Hey James - went back to your site to find your club, you don’t have one LOL
Maybe consider one for it ;)

    Cheers
